Chick naming competition takes off

Date published: 28 May 2019

Another ‘name the peregrine falcon chick’ competition has been launched by Rochdale Borough Council.

The annual challenge asks residents to come up with names for the three falcon chicks living at the top of the Rochdale Town Hall.

Each winner will receive a £20 voucher to spend at Rochdale Town Hall’s splendid Clock Tower Restaurant, followed by a guided tour of the Grade 1 listed building.

Local schools will again be entering the competition, with children across the borough already thinking up suggestions.

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for culture, said: “Our live webcam has been a huge success story with a dedicated following from across the UK and beyond.

“Thousands of people follow the fortunes of our feathered friends, who have made the town hall their home since the council built a nest for them in 2008.

“Rochdale town centre is such a wonderful haven for wildlife with heron, geese, kingfisher, greenfinch and other birds regularly seen along the River Roch.

“Our falcon chick naming competition is a bit of fun, but I am sure the number of entries will soar to record levels. Good luck to all nature lovers.”

Suggestions for chick names can be emailed to falcons@rochdale.gov.uk

Full details on how to enter and all the competition terms and conditions can be found at www.rochdale.gov.uk/falcons

The closing date for entries is midnight on Monday 10 June.
