Rochdale backs Brexit Party in European Parliament elections

Date published: 28 May 2019

The borough of Rochdale backed the Brexit Party in the European Parliament elections, with more than 15,000 people voting for the newly formed party.

Voting turnout in Rochdale was recorded at 30.4%, slightly lower that the north west turnout of 33.1%.

Turnout is the number of people voting in an election as a percentage of the total number of people eligible to vote in that election.

Nearly a third of the registered electorate voted for Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party (32.1%), closely followed by the Labour party in second (30.6%).

Coming in third, the Liberal Democrats earned 11.4% of the vote, whilst 8.1 % of voters opted for the Green party.

The Conservatives earned just 5.7% of local votes, with UKIP hot on their heels with 5.1%.

4% of Rochdale voters chose far-right independent Tommy Robinson (real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon), with just 1.9% backing the newly formed independent group, Change UK.

The English Democrats, the UK European Union Party (UKEUP) and independent Mohammad Aslam all received less than 1% of the vote each, with respective percentages of 0.7, 0.4 and 0.1.

285 ballots were rejected in Rochdale for being void or voting for more than one candidate.

The Rochdale vote makes up a portion of the overall north west result.

For the eight north west seats, MEPs were elected from the Brexit Party, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Green.

The elected MEPs for the north west are:

The Brexit Party:

  • Claire Regina Fox
  • Henrik Eyser Overgaard Nielsen
  • David Richard Bull

Labour Party:

  • Theresa Mary Griffin
  • Julie Carolyn Ward

Liberal Democrats:
