Construction training scheme builds a chance for change

GMCT staff and learners meet with local construction employers and representatives from Hopwood Hall College

A new training scheme based in Middleton is giving people the opportunity to break into the construction industry for free.

Greater Manchester Construction Training (GMCT) has been providing vital training courses, with the financial backing of Hopwood Hall College, for free to adults looking to build a career in the construction industry.

With a greater focus being placed on generating skilled jobs, the scheme provides an ideal opportunity for those looking to move into construction and restart their careers.

Employers from across the Rochdale Borough were invited to the Heywood site to meet the trainees and potentially employ them.

One such person looking to use the training to start a new career was Rob Pook. He said: “Having the opportunity to retrain like this for free is life changing. I’ve been working as a taxi driver for nine years, but now I want to refocus my career, build a better life and broaden my horizons.

“I’ve carried on working as a driver by night and training here in the day, so it’s been hard work, but it’s an opportunity I had to leap at.

“When you’re in school and college most people don’t really know what they want to do, despite what we tell our kids. Having opportunities like this mean it’s not too late for you to realise later down the line and make the most of it.”

GMCT’s company director, Brad Daniel, said: “We at GMCT Ltd are delighted with the success, and co-operation from all parties involved in delivering this Plant Operators Training Course. The first cohort is the culmination of three years hard work and dedication to deliver this course.

“My thanks and gratitude to Hopwood Hall College, Rochdale Borough Council, Takeuchi UK Ltd and local construction employers such as PLP Construction Ltd, Mayo Civil Engineers Ltd, PP O’Connor and Westbourne Civil Engineers for their support. Most importantly congratulations to the first cohort in passing all their CPCS plant qualifications and gaining employment.”
