Following her recent visit to local foodbanks, Liz McInnes MP has called for a “broken system” to be fixed.

Ms McInnes visited local foodbanks in Heywood and Middleton last week and met with the volunteers working there.

Speaking of her visit, Ms McInnes said: “Both foodbanks are struggling for donations. They get peaks and troughs of donations and in the summer, they sometimes find that they’re not getting as much stuff coming in.”

“The volunteers also told me that at this time of year, during the summer holidays, people are asking for family bags specifically as the kids are away from school and missing out on school meals and breakfast.

“If you’ve got any food that you can donate, please bring it along to either of the foodbanks.

“You can also drop off donations at my office at 45 York Street.”

About the use of foodbanks locally and nationally, Ms McInnes added: “Behind the fantastic work that the volunteers are doing there is a story that is affecting a lot of people in our country and that’s about the rising use of foodbanks. Figures from the Trussell Trust show a 30 times increase in food bank use.

“It’s an absolute scandal that in Heywood and Middleton so many of our constituents are going hungry. We really need to fix this broken system.”
