St Edward’s School celebrates North West In Bloom School award

St Edward’s Primary School in Castleton won a North West In Bloom School award, equivalent to a Gold Award, for their work on a variety of clean and green projects.

St Edward’s is a Green Flag Award school for their eco work and are in the hall of fame for having over nine green flag awards.

It’s the ninth year that the school has taken part in In Bloom and they’ve made eco work their ethos. Pupils from across the school are involved in a variety of clean and green projects.

The school is passionate about involving the wider community in their work and every year they help out at Castleton Train Station In Bloom and they are affiliated with local church, St Martin’s, on supporting them with their eco knowledge and experience to become an Eco Church.

 

 

The school is also working with local sheltered housing provider Onward Housing on growing vegetables with residents and using them to cook dishes that can be shared.

One project that’s really taken off for the school is their “Bee Inspired” garden, which pupils from year 6 developed as part of their Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award. The pupils worked together to design the garden and enlisted the help of year 3 and 4 pupils to create bees and flowers for display.

Pupils have twinned their love of gardening with highlighting recycling in school and they frequently turn plastic bottles into plant displays, such as their stunning flower wall, and grown herbs in them for cooking.

 

 

Head teacher, Paula Mann said: “We’re really passionate about the clean and green agenda and it’s nice to be recognised at the North West In Bloom awards. The children have learnt so much and it’s lovey to be able to spread our learning into the community so that everyone benefits from our work.”
