Charity burger eating bash raises £2,500 for kidney research charity

Date published: 17 December 2019

A charity burger eating bash at Rochdale’s Flying Horse Hotel is expected to have raised over £2,500.

Hosted at the Packer Street pub on Wednesday 11 December, 27 people took part in the competition, which ultimately resulted in a three-way tie between pub landlord Ben Boothman, Andy Jenkins and Nathan Cowell.

Each competitor was sponsored for their entry, aiming to eat 10 burgers as fast as possible, in aid of the kidney research charity, Action for Alport’s.

The evening was held in honour of Ben’s eldest son, Oliver, who suffers from a rare condition called Alport’s Syndrome. Oliver was diagnosed with the condition in 2013, a genetic kidney disease which causes deafness and renal failure in those it affects.

Hosted by Councillor Andy Kelly, the evening kicked off at 7.30pm, with a time cap of 9pm being added partway through the night.

The three deemed to have eaten the most without being sick were Ben, Andy Jenkins and Nathan Cowell, who all ate the equivalent of roughly eight burgers.

A raffle also took place with fabulous prizes, including a Kindle Fire, Yankee Candles, a variety of gift vouchers plus several gift hampers.

All uneaten burgers were donated to the homeless following the competition.
