60% of local pupils are meeting expected primary school standards

Date published: 19 December 2019

Overall, 60% of final year primary pupils in the Rochdale borough have met the expected standard, according to the latest primary school league tables.

The local score is slightly lower than the national average of pupils meeting the expected standards which is 65%, whilst local average scores for maths (104) and reading (103) are both just one point lower than the national average.

The highest scoring schools for meeting the expected standards – which also had the highest reading and maths scores – are:

  • All Souls’ CE, Heywood (87%, reading 107, maths 107)
  • Shawclough Community, Rochdale (86%, reading 106, maths 108)
  • Bowlee Park Community, Middleton (85%, reading 109, maths 109)
  • Sacred Heart RC, Rochdale (83%, reading 107, maths 106)
  • St Michael’s CofE, Bamford (89%, reading 109, maths 108).

In contrast, the bottom five schools all have fewer than 40% of pupils meeting the expected standards:

  • Our Lady and St Paul's Roman Catholic Primary School, Heywood (32%, reading 99, maths 99)
  • Moorhouse, Milnrow (34%, reading 100, maths 98)
  • St Mary’s RC, Middleton (36%, reading 100, maths 99)
  • Lowerplace, Kingsway (37%, reading 99, maths 101)
  • Alice Ingham, Rochdale (39%, reading 101, maths 100) and Broadfield (39%, reading 98, maths 102)

Pupils deemed to be achieving at a higher standard total just 6% in the borough, almost half that of the national figure (11%).

Ten schools in Rochdale have a higher percentage of pupils of a higher standard than the national average.

The top three this year are: Bowlee Park (31%), Caldershaw (23%) and St Michael’s CofE (23%).

Gillian Barratt, head of schools at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Schools in the borough are working hard to make improvements to pupil’s outcomes in reading, writing and mathematics and we recognise that progress is improving, which is pleasing.

“We are working closely with schools where pupil achievement is below expectations to ensure that children leave primary school ready for their secondary education.”

As well as test result data, the school league tables also provide lots of information about schools' social make-up, teaching workforce and the historic trend in their results.
