Whitworth girls present home-made blankets to care home residents

Date published: 24 December 2019

Residents of a care home in Whitworth were delighted to receive blankets that had been hand made by members of the Wednesday Club.

The girls’ group meets at the 515 Young People’s Centre in Market Street, and undertakes different projects - the first was to create a patchwork blanket for residents of Barley View Care Home.

Cameron Ashworth, 13, said: “Along with Evie Meek, I sat with a couple, Gordon and Sheila, and we talked about what they used to do when they used to work.

“She started crying because she really liked the blanket we gave to her and we also gave a blanket to Gordon.”

Cameron had not really sewn before attending the club and said it was something she might carry on with.

Katie Needham, 13, had worked on her blanket with Skye Wilkinson, both students from Whitworth Community High School.

She said: “I handed my blanket to Ruth and she kept asking how we had stitched it, what was inside, then she was talking about her daughter and asked us where we were from.

“She kept saying our teachers should be proud of us.”

Katie had learnt some sewing at primary school and also done a little at Whitworth Community High School.

The team will be deciding a new project for the next eight weeks.

Katie and Cameron both said they enjoyed the group because they got to chat to people they didn’t know and had made new friends.
