Fisherfield children donate to Middleton foodbank at Christmas

Date published: 30 December 2019

This Christmas the children at Fisherfield Childcare, Middleton, have been learning about the importance of helping others.

Eddie the Elf paid the nursery a visit and set them a task of creating a ‘Tin Tree’ of food donations to go alongside the nursery Christmas tree to ensure all families have enough food to eat over the festive period.

On Christmas Eve, the children walked down from the nursery to The Lighthouse Project in Middleton. The Lighthouse Project is part of local charity Inspire Middleton, which provides the community with vital services and support including a foodbank for those in need.

The children told Pam and Cath, the centre managers, how they had worked hard to collect a full trolley worth of donations. Before the children left the centre, they sang ‘We Wish you a Merry Christmas’ for the Lighthouse Project staff.

Sabrina Iqbal, Nursery Manager, said: “Christmas is a time which children mostly associate with receiving gifts; however, we know not every family is so lucky.

“Now more than ever, we are seeing and hearing about families in crisis and we wanted to do something meaningful to contribute positively to our local community. The children have been so excited to come into nursery and see how the tin tree has grown.

“We are so grateful to all the parents who attend our nursery that have donated so generously and created a new Christmas tradition with us.”
