Local service CPnurture goes Beyond Psychology with new name

Date published: 03 January 2020

Local psychology service CPnurture has revealed its new name - Beyond Psychology - as chosen for by the public.

Previously named Nurture Psychology, the not-for-profit social enterprise, which operates from The Esplanade, had to change its name to one without the word ‘nurture’ following a legal situation with another company.

Set up and founded by chartered clinical psychologists, Dr Kirsty Hughes and Dr Louise Mansell in March 2017, the name CPnurture was used on a temporary basis, until the new name was announced in December, after engaging young people and the public in helping decide upon a new name.

Foster carers, young people, parents, and teaching staff came to the service on 13 November and attended the coffee morning on 24 October, suggesting names and answering three questions: ‘what is important to you when accessing a service’, ‘how would you describe us’, and ‘what comes to mind when thinking about our service’.

Adults and children alike engaged in creating plasticine characters for an animation that Beyond is going to develop alongside their collaborators regarding the name change.

People described them as going above and beyond when supporting children, schools, social care, families and carers, and they too feel that the public have gone beyond in supporting them, promoting them, and how they describe them.

Dr Hughes and Dr Mansell are now looking forward to various creative ways of involving everybody in events to celebrate their re-launch.

Events are planned to take place in collaboration with Communitree in Bury, Fired Paint a Pot Café in Bury, Skylight Circus in Rochdale, M6 theatre in Rochdale, and The University of Manchester.

Although these events will form part of the re-launch, they will also aim to raise awareness of some of the most underrepresented difficulties young people experience, such as early life trauma, as well as benefiting those who attend.

Funded by schools, social care, the NHS and parents, the Beyond Psychology service has worked in the public sector with the NHS Child and adolescent mental health services, schools and children’s services as well as working alongside occupational therapists, social workers, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, speech and language therapists, and mental health nurses.

Private sessions are also available.
