Roadworks, temporary local road closures and restrictions

Information on current and forthcoming roadworks and road closures across the borough.


Area: Rochdale
Reason: to safely vacate supporters away from Spotland Stadium after the Rochdale AFC v Gillingham football match.

Expected start and finish: 1.30pm-6pm, Saturday 25 January 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Wilbutts Lane, from its junction with Sandy Lane to its junction with Churchill Street.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Sandy Lane, Edenfield Road and Churchill Street.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to allow access to a housing development site.

Expected start and finish: Monday 16 July 2018 - Wednesday 15 January 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary cycle lane closure:

  • On the east side of Hollin Lane, from a point 125 metres north of its junction with Hazelhurst Drive for a distance of 56 metres in a northerly direction.
  • From a point 245 metres north of its junction with Hazelhurst Drive for a distance of 52 metres in a northerly direction.

Alternative route: cyclists will still be able to travel down these roads using the main areas of the road, not the cycle lanes.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to construct the new railway station access.

Expected start and finish: Wednesday 7 August 2019 - Tuesday 4 February 2020.    
Restriction and location:

  • Prohibition of pedestrians from proceeding along the southerly footway of Oldham Road, from a point 90 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 80 metres in a westerly direction.
  • Prohibition of waiting on the northerly side of Oldham Road, from a point 30 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 160 metres in a westerly direction.

Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closures are in place.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to repair a damaged water main.

Expected start and finish: Thursday 3 January 2020 - Friday 24 January 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Spring Gardens from its junction with New Lane for a distance of 40 metres in a northerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is New Lane, Long Street and King Street.
Organised by: Rochdale Borough Council.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to construct a sewer overflow in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: Monday 6 January 2020 - Friday 5 June 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Waverley Road, from its junction with Rochdale Road for a distance of 50 metres in a north-westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Rochdale Road and Nowell Road.
Organised by: Rochdale Borough Council.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to repair a frame and cover in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 6.30pm-10.30pm, Tuesday 14 January 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Whalley Road, from its junction with the roundabout at its junction of Waverley Road and Nowell Road for a distance of 30 metres in a north-westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Whalley Road, Hollin Lane, Rochdale Road and Nowell Road.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to repair the pedestrian bridge and allow the safe passage of pedestrians only.

Expected start and finish: Thursday 6 June 2019 - Monday 16 March 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Schofield Street, from its junction with Cowburn Street for a distance of 32 metres in a south-easterly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Walton Street, Manchester Road, Manchester Street, Hardfield Street and Schofield Street.
Organised by: Rochdale Borough Council.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to facilitate works to a new housing development.

Expected start and finish: Monday 4 November 2019 - Friday 1 May 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Claybank Street, from a point 32 metres east of its junction with Cedar Avenue for a distance of 105 metres.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Cedar Avenue and Furness Avenue.

Area: Pennines
Work being undertaken: Virgin Media are currently installing new Fibre Broadband in the Pennines area.

Expected start and finish: ongoing
Who to contact: for any issues about this work, please use the following methods to gain the quickest and safest possible resolution.

  • Contractors on site - contact a site supervisor. They are best placed to resolve many issues there and then. In most instances, this will be the quickest and safest way to resolve any issue.
  • Virgin Media Helpdesk - if unresolved, or there are no contractors in the area, or if the site has been left in an unsafe manner and requires urgent attention, please ring the Virgin Media helpdesk on 0333 000 5925. The helpdesk hours are Monday - Friday, 8am - 7.30pm & Saturday, 8am - 12noon. The helpdesk will alert the contractor and Virgin Media's compliance engineers.
  • Alternatively, please email expansionworks@virginmedia.co.uk with details of your address and preferred contact method.
  • Rochdale Borough Council Highways - we need to be aware of issues being raised with Virgin Media. Please email highways@rochdale.gov.uk or phone on 0300 303 8879, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. At all other times, please phone our Contact Centre on 0300 303 8875 for emergency work on the highway.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to protect the public while works are done on a new housing development.

Expected start and finish: 8am-5pm each day from Monday 2 December 2019 - Saturday 2 May 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of unnamed footpath from Bramhall Close to Elizabethan Way and from Elizabethan Way for a distance of 46 metres in a north westerly direction. As this is a footpath closure, it will only affect pedestrians and cyclists.
Alternative route: the alternative route for pedestrians and cyclists will be clearly signed when the closure is in place.
