Information on current and forthcoming roadworks and road closures across the borough.


Rochdale: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to repair a void beneath the carriageway.

Expected finish: Thursday 6 February 2020.
Restriction and location: closure of Milnrow Road in both directions in Newbold. 
The following diversion routes are in place:

  • From the junction of Milnrow Road and Fishwick Street, traffic will be diverted up Fishwick Street, left onto Oldham Road, left onto Kingsway with a diversion ends sign at the junction of Milnrow Road/Kingsway & Rochdale Road. On the reverse diversion route, due to the signalised gyratory junction at Oldham Road, traffic will have to be sent south onto Oldham Road then right onto the A671 and then head north up Oldham Road, ending on Fishwick Street.
     
  • From the junction of Milnrow Road/Kingsway/Rochdale Road at Kingsway Retail Park, traffic will be diverted up Albert Royds Street, left onto Halifax Road (A58), left onto John Street, up Molesworth Street and end the diversion on Milnrow Road. This diversion will only be set up in one direction.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to repair a water hydrant in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 9am, Tuesday 21 January 2020 - 9am, Tuesday 18 February 2020.
Restriction and location: closure of Keswick Street, from its junction with Manchester Road to a point 30 metres in a westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Manchester Road and Heywood Road.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to repair a sewer in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 9am, Thursday 23 January 2020 - 9am, Thursday 20 February 2020.
Restriction and location: closure of Hunters Lane, from its junction with Union Street for a distance of 30 metres in a south-westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Union Street, St Mary's Gate and Hunters Lane.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to safely vacate supporters away from Spotland Stadium after the Rochdale AFC v Shrewsbury football match.

Expected start and finish: 1.30pm-6pm, Saturday 1 February 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Wilbutts Lane from its junction with Sandy Lane to its junction with Churchill Street.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Sandy Lane, Edenfield Road and Churchill Street.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to move lifting equipment onto the Rochdale Riverside development.

Expected start and finish: 7am-7pm, Sunday 16 February 2020.
Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure of Baillie Street, from its junction with Constantine Road to a point 20 metres in an easterly direction.
  • Temporary closure of Bell Street for its entire length.

Alternative route: there's no alternative route for vehicles.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to hold the Conrad Cole naming service and parade.

Expected start and finish:

  • The road closures will be operative from 11.15am-12.30pm, Wednesday 26 February 2020.
  • The prohibition of parking will be operative from 6am-12noon, Wednesday 26 February 2020.

Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure of Hill Top Drive, from its easterly junction with Friars Crescent to its westerly junction with Friars Crescent.
  • Temporary closure of Friars Crescent, from its westerly junction with Hill Top Drive to its junction with Lilac Road.
  • Temporary closure of Lilac Road, for its entire length.
  • Temporary closure of Kildare Crescent, at its junction with Lilac Road.
  • Temporary closure of Balderstone Road, from its junction with Mornington Road for a distance of 70 metres in a westerly direction.
  • Temporary prohibition of parking on Hill Top Drive, on both sides from its easterly junction with Mornington Road for a distance of 70 metres in a westerly direction.

Alternative route:

The parade will take place by way of a rolling road closure. Due to the nature and duration of the parade, it's not necessary for alternative routes to be in place for all closures.

  • The alternative route for vehicles using Hill Top Drive is Balderstone Road, Ruskin Road and Hill Top Drive.
  • The alternative route for vehicles using Balderstone Road is Ruskin Road, Hill Top Drive and Balderstone Road.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to install new waste water monitoring equipment.

Expected start and finish: 7.30pm-6am each day, Thursday 27 February - Sunday 1 March 2020.
Restriction and location:

  • Temporarily prohibit vehicles from turning right from St Mary's Gate onto Dane Street in a westerly direction.
  • Temporarily prohibit vehicles from turning right from The Esplanade onto St Mary's Gate in a north-easterly direction.
  • Temporarily prohibit vehicles from proceeding onto Dane Street onto The Esplanade in a westerly direction.

Alternative route:

  • The alternative route for the right turn prohibition from St Mary's Gate onto Dane Street is Manchester Road, Roch Valley Way and Bury Road.
  • The alternative route for the right turn prohibition from The Esplanade onto St Mary's Gate is Dane Street and College Road.
  • The alternative route for vehicles prohibited from travelling from Dane Street onto The Esplanade in a westerly direction is St Mary's Gate and Newgate.

Reason: to install traffic light detector loops in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 9 March 2020 - 5pm, Friday 20 March 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Malvern Street West, from its junction with Sandy Lane to a point 20 metres in an easterly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Claremont Road, Bury Road and Sandy Lane.

Middleton: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Middleton
Reason: to construct the new railway station access.

Expected start and finish: Wednesday 7 August 2019 - Tuesday 4 February 2020.    
Restriction and location:

  • Prohibition of pedestrians from proceeding along the southerly footway of Oldham Road, from a point 90 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 80 metres in a westerly direction.
  • Prohibition of waiting on the northerly side of Oldham Road, from a point 30 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 160 metres in a westerly direction.

Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closures are in place.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to construct a sewer overflow in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: Monday 6 January 2020 - Friday 5 June 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Waverley Road, from its junction with Rochdale Road for a distance of 50 metres in a north-westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Rochdale Road and Nowell Road.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to repair a frame and cover in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 6.30pm-10.30pm, Tuesday 14 January 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Whalley Road, from its junction with the roundabout at its junction of Waverley Road and Nowell Road for a distance of 30 metres in a north-westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Whalley Road, Hollin Lane, Rochdale Road and Nowell Road.

Heywood: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Heywood
Reason: to repair the pedestrian bridge and allow the safe passage of pedestrians only.

Expected start and finish: 12.01am, Thursday 6 June 2019 - 11.59pm, Monday 16 March 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Schofield Street, from its junction with Cowburn Street for a distance of 32 metres in a south-easterly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Walton Street, Manchester Road, Manchester Street, Hardfield Street and Schofield Street.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to facilitate works to a new housing development.

Expected start and finish: 6.01pm, Monday 4 November 2019 - 6pm, Friday 1 May 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Claybank Street, from a point 32 metres east of its junction with Cedar Avenue for a distance of 105 metres.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Cedar Avenue and Furness Avenue.

Pennines: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Pennines
Reason: Virgin Media are currently installing new Fibre Broadband in the Pennines area.

Expected start and finish: ongoing
Who to contact: for any issues about this work, please use the following methods to gain the quickest and safest possible resolution.

  • Contractors on site - contact a site supervisor. They are best placed to resolve many issues there and then. In most instances, this will be the quickest and safest way to resolve any issue.
  • Virgin Media Helpdesk - if unresolved, or there are no contractors in the area, or if the site has been left in an unsafe manner and requires urgent attention, please ring the Virgin Media helpdesk on 0333 000 5925. The helpdesk hours are Monday - Friday, 8am-7.30pm & Saturday, 8am-12noon. The helpdesk will alert the contractor and Virgin Media's compliance engineers.
  • Alternatively, please email expansionworks@virginmedia.co.uk with details of your address and preferred contact method.
  • Rochdale Borough Council Highways - we need to be aware of issues being raised with Virgin Media. Please email highways@rochdale.gov.uk or phone on 0300 303 8879, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. At all other times, please phone our Contact Centre on 0300 303 8875 for emergency work on the highway.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to protect the public while works are done on a new housing development.

Expected start and finish: 8am-5pm each day from Monday 2 December 2019 - Saturday 2 May 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of unnamed footpath from Bramhall Close to Elizabethan Way and from Elizabethan Way for a distance of 46 metres in a north westerly direction. As this is a footpath closure, it will only affect pedestrians and cyclists.
Alternative route: the alternative route for pedestrians and cyclists will be clearly signed when the closure is in place.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to repair a defective sewer in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 20 January 2020 - 11.59am, Monday 10 February 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Barehill Street, from a point 50 metres east of its junction with Sale Street to its junction with Leah Street.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Sale Street, Sutcliffe Street, Town House Road and Barehill Street.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to carry out safe drainage improvement works along the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 9am-4pm each day, Monday 10 February 2020 - Friday 6 March 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Higher Calderbrook Road, from its junction with Calderbrook Road for a distance of 190 metres in a north-easterly direction.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to maintain the level crossing.​​​​​​​

Expected start and finish: 11pm, Saturday 14 March 2020 - 6am, Sunday 15 March 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Smithy Bridge Road, from a point 50 metres north west of the level crossing to a point 50 metres south east of the level crossing.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Smithy Bridge Road, Milnrow Road (Rochdale), Albert Royds Street, Halifax Road (A58) and Smithy Bridge Road.
