Over £3,000 was awarded in grants to local voluntary groups and organisations at the Heywood Charities Fete AGM at Sandon House on Monday 17 February.

The proceeds raised during the Heywood Charities Fete in September last year were split between a number of local groups, with the Mayor of Rochdale, Billy Sheerin, presenting cheques to: St Luke’s Beavers, St Joseph's SVP, 8th Heywood Scouts, Back O’the Moss Community Centre, Crimble Croft Community Centre, Crimble Croft Brownies, Hall Things Drama, Friends of Queens Park, Kats Dance Events and Community Team, Heywood in Bloom, St Margaret’s Brownies, 7th St George’s Rainbows, 14th Woodland Guides and Heywood Little Monkeys.

The Mayor also handed out the trophies for the best float and the best walking entry in the parade to Hey Kids and the Kats Dance events and community team.

Mayor Sheerin said: "It is the hard work of the committee who organise events like this that makes me proud. Heywood has a great community spirit that is clearly visible at the charities fete, I pay tribute to those that organise this event."

The outgoing chairman of the fete committee, John Heyworth said: "It's a pleasure to see the Mayor handing out these funds to groups that do so much work in the local community.

“It is the support of people across the town in attending the fete that makes this possible, long may that support continue."

The meeting also saw the election of a new chairman for the coming year, with Phillip Corns taking this role.

The fete this year – ‘the party in the park’ – takes place in Queen’s Park on Sunday 6 September.
