Man impersonating police officer attempting to steal card details from Heywood residents

Date published: 28 February 2020

A man has been impersonating a police officer to try and steal bank details, local police officers have warned.

Rochdale officers from Greater Manchester Police say they have had reports of a man knocking on residents’ doors in Heywood, telling people he is a police officer investigating bank fraud, asking for card details.

He is also telling residents there are fake £20 notes in circulation in the area and asking to inspect any notes.

He is described as being white and of a large build, aged between 40 and 50, with short greying hair and wearing blue jeans and dark or grey coloured jacket.

Local officers warned on social media: “The male is NOT wearing a police uniform. Genuine Police Officers would not knock on doors asking for cash or bank details and if anyone else comes into contact with the male at their doorstep please ring 999.

“Fortunately, this male has not yet taken any money or card details due to residents being suspicious and cautious.

“Efforts are ongoing to identify the male offender.

“If anyone has any information please ring 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
