Coronavirus: Tony Lloyd MP calls for crackdown on profiteering

Date published: 25 March 2020

Tony Lloyd, MP for Rochdale, is calling for a crackdown on businesses that increase prices on basic or vital items during the COVID-19 crisis.

Mr Lloyd said: "Essential workers who are playing a vital role in keeping us safe and the country moving often work extra hours on early morning or late evening shifts.

"As well as consumer stockpiling, profiteering is contributing to many workers being unable to purchase basic or vital food items.

"In times of emergency, prices go up and we need rapid protection in price regulation to combat this. I have been contacted by many constituents who have told me that shops and cash and carries are raising prices of food and sanitisers by as much as 2,000%."

Writing to Alok Sharma MP, the Secretary of State for Business, Mr Lloyd said: "I note that countries such as the United States, where profiteering has been prevalent for a long time, two thirds of states have legislation in place to stop profiteering.

"I would be most grateful to learn if you have considered the United States model, and if similar legislation will be rolled out across the United Kingdom to stop profiteering.

"I look forward to your response."
