Support for those affected by domestic abuse

Date published: 06 July 2020

Rochdale’s WHAG will host a free webinar on Wednesday 15 July, giving the public an insight into how WHAG work locally to support those affected by domestic abuse.

Currently based on Drake Street, WHAG (formerly Women’s Housing Action Group), was founded by Rose Summer in 1981. The organisation aims to provide affordable housing to homeless women aged 16-65, and runs domestic abuse services across Rochdale, Bury, Cheshire West and Chester.

During the current global pandemic, domestic abuse services are seeing increased demand, and WHAG are keen to provide 'essential support and empowerment' for those affected by domestic abuse throughout the coronavirus pandemic, before, and beyond.

The webinar, which will be hosted online from 5.30pm - 6.30pm, is an opportunity for participants to find out about the vital work WHAG does in the local community to support and empower people subject to domestic abuse, and also engage with those who are rising to these challenges in domestic abuse every day.

CEO of WHAG, Kirsty Rhodes, will be the host and speaker, open to questions. She said: “At first glance, the virus that is sweeping the world may appear to have little in common with domestic abuse, but the recent news tells a different story. The UN has described the worldwide increase in domestic abuse as a ‘shadow pandemic’ alongside Covid-19.

“Now, more than ever, our work at WHAG is vital. We support our clients to overcome the experiences they have had. We empower them to build up the skills and resources they need to recover and move on, take on a tenancy of their own and keep it in the long term. We give them the information they need to make positive choices about their futures.

“Many of our closest friends and supporters have asked how they can help at this time. We believe it is vital to inform our local community in the North West, and those with connections to our area, on our work and the impact of Covid-19.

“WHAG is an incredible organisation with a team of dedicated staff, supporting over 1,000 people every year to change their lives for the better."
