Information on current and forthcoming roadworks and road closures across the borough.


Rochdale: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to replace a water stop tap cover in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 7am-7pm, Thursday 9 July 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Partington Street, from its junction with Manchester Road to a point 75 metres in a southerly direction.
Alternative route: there are no alternative routes available.
Organised by: Rochdale Borough Council.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 1 June - 5pm, Friday 10 July 2020 as required.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Marland Fold, from its junction with Bolton Road to a point 500 metres in a northerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closure is in place.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to hold a temporary coronavirus (COVID-19) testing centre.

Expected start and finish: From Monday 6 June 2020.
Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure of Packer Street, from its junction with Vicars Gate for a distance of 61 metres in an easterly direction.
  • Temporary closure of Town Hall Square behind the Town Hall, from its junction with Vicar's Gate for a distance of 61 metres in an easterly direction.

Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 15 June - 6pm, Monday 13 July 2020 as required.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of:

  • Ann Street from its junction with Drake Street to its junction with George Street.
  • Back Drake Street for its entire length.
  • Caton Street for its entire length.
  • Great George Street for its entire length.
  • Greenwood Street for its entire length.

Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closures are in place.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 29 June - 6pm, Monday 13 July 2020 as required.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Vine Place for its entire length.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closure is in place.

Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 6 July - 6pm, Monday 20 July 2020 as required.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Pomona Street for its entire length.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closure is in place.

Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 6 July - 6pm, Monday 20 July 2020 as required.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Pomona Street for its entire length.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closure is in place.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 20 July - 6pm, Monday 3 August 2020 as required.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of:

  • Clapgate Road for its entire length.
  • Industry Street for its entire length.

Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closures are in place.
Organised by: Rochdale Borough Council.    

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to install an electric main in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 20 July - 6pm, Saturday 31 October 2020 as required.
Restriction and location: temporary prohibition of waiting on:

  • The south side of Mark Street, from the junction of Park Road to the junction of Athol Street.
  • The westerly side of Athol Street, for its entire length.
  • The northerly side of the junction with Athol Street, for a distance of 101 metres in a westerly direction.
  • The easterly side of Buckley Road, for its entire length.
  • The easterly side of Rugby Road, from the junction of Halifax Road for a distance of 40 metres in a northerly direction.
  • The northerly side of Red Lane, from the junction with Halifax Road for a distance of 222 metres in a north-easterly direction to the junction with Buckley Lane. There will be temporary multiway lights in operation from Red Lane to the roundabout with Albert Royds Street.

Middleton: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Middleton
Reason: to construct a new way to access the railway station.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 1 June - 6pm, Friday 28 August 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary:

  • Closure of the south pavement on Oldham Road from a point 90 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 80 metres in a westerly direction.
  • No waiting on the north side of Oldham Road from a point 30 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 160 metres in a westerly direction.

Alternative route: a pedestrian crossing will be in place so pedestrias can cross onto the north pavement.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to construct a sewer overflow in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 6pm, Monday 15 June - 6pm, Friday 31 July 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Waverley Road from its junction with Rochdale Road for a distance of 50 metres in a north-westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Rochdale Road and Nowell Road.

Heywood: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Heywood
Reason: Virgin Media are currently installing new Fibre Broadband in the Heywood area.
Expected start and finish: ongoing
Who to contact: for any issues about this work, please use the following methods to gain the quickest and safest possible resolution:

  • Contractors on site - contact a site supervisor. They are best placed to resolve many issues there and then. In most instances, this will be the quickest and safest way to resolve any issue.
  • Virgin Media Helpdesk - if unresolved, or there are no contractors in the area, or if the site has been left in an unsafe manner and requires urgent attention, please ring the Virgin Media helpdesk on 0333 000 5925. The helpdesk hours are: Monday-Friday 8am-7.30pm & Saturday 8am-12noon. The helpdesk will alert the contractor and Virgin Media's compliance engineers.
  • Alternatively, please email expansionworks@virginmedia.co.uk with details of your address and preferred contact method.
  • Rochdale Borough Council Highways - we need to be aware of issues being raised with Virgin Media. Please email highways@rochdale.gov.uk or phone on 0300 303 8879, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. At all other times, please phone our Contact Centre on 0300 303 8875 for emergency work on the highway.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to facilitate works to a new housing development.

Expected start and finish: 12midnight, Saturday 23 May 2020 - 6pm, Friday 10 July 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Claybank Street, from a point 32 metres east of its junction with Cedar Avenue for a distance of 105 metres in an easterly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Cedar Avenue and Furness Avenue.

Pennines: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Pennines
Reason: for safety reasons a temporary 40mph speed limit will be in force.

Expected start and finish: The temporary speed limit will be in force from 9am, Monday 22 June - 11.59pm, Monday 27 July 2020.
Temporary 40mph speed limit will be imposed on:

  • Huddersfield Road, Newhey, from its junction with Woodside to the borough boundary with Oldham.
  • Rochdale Road, Denshaw, from the borough boundary for a distance of 100 metres in an easterly direction.

Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Newhey Road, Shaw Road, Milnrow Road, Buckstones Road, Oldham Road and Rochdale Road.
