Information on current and forthcoming roadworks and road closures across the borough.


Rochdale: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Reason: to hold a temporary coronavirus (COVID-19) testing centre.
Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure of Packer Street, from its junction with Vicars Gate for a distance of 61 metres in an easterly direction.
  • Temporary closure of Town Hall Square behind the Town Hall, from its junction with Vicar's Gate for a distance of 61 metres in an easterly direction.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to promote social distancing measures due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Expected start and finish: Friday 3 July -  Friday 30 April 2021.  
Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure of Packer Street, from its junction with Nelson Street for a distance of 56 metres in a northerly direction.
  • Temporary one-way operation on Nelson Street. Vehicles will not be able to travel in a westerly direction the junction with Church Lane and the junction with King Street.

No waiting for any vehicle in the following areas:

  • The east side of King Street, from a point 5 metres north of its junction with Nelson Street to a point 39 metres south of its junction with Fleece Street.
  • The west side of King Street, from its junction with Nelson Street for a distance of 5 metres in a northerly direction.
  • The west side of King Street, from its junction with Fleece Street for a distance of 39 metres in a southerly direction.
  • The east side of Packer Street, from its junction with Fleece Street for a distance of 27 metres in a southerly direction, including the new termination point.
  • The south side of Nelson Street, from a point opposite the easterly kerb of King Street to a point 7 metres west of a point opposite the west kerb of Kong Street.
  • The north side of Nelson Street, from its junction with King Street for a distance of 7 metres in a westerly direction.

No waiting for any vehicles except taxis in the following areas and times:

  • No waiting at any time except for taxis in Town Hall Square, the east side within the parking bay, from a point 3 metres south of its junction with the most northerly access road connecting Packer Street to a point 3 metres north of its junction with the most southerly access road connecting Packer Street.
  • No waiting 6pm-10am except for taxis in Fleece Street, the north side from a point 5 metres east of its junction with King Street for a distance of 14 metres in an easterly direction.
  • No waiting 10am-6pm except for vehicles with a valid disabled persons parking badge in Fleece Street, the north side from a point 5 metres east of its junction with King Street for a distance of 14 metres in an easterly direction.
  • No waiting at any time except for goods vehicles loading and unloading in Nelson Street, both sides from a point 7 metres west of its junction with King Street for a distance of 16 metres in a westerly direction.
  • No waiting at any time except for goods vehicles loading and unloading in King Street, the west side from a point 5 metres north of its junction with Nelson Street to a point 39 metres south of its junction with Fleece Street.
  • No waiting 8am-6pm, maximum stay up to 10 hours, for any vehicle not displaying a valid payment ticket in Nelson Street, the south side from a point 9 metres west of its junction with Chucrch Lane to a point opposite the east kerb of King Street.

Alternative route: the alternative route for Packer Street is The Esplanade, Manchester Road, Drake Street, School Lane and Church Lane.

Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 20 July - 6pm, Monday 3 August 2020 as required.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of:

  • Clapgate Road for its entire length.
  • Industry Street for its entire length.

Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on street when the closures are in place.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to install an electric mains in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 20 July - 6pm, Saturday 31 October 2020 as required.
Restriction and location: temporary prohibition of waiting on:

  • The south side of Mark Street, from the junction of Park Road to the junction of Athol Street.
  • The westerly side of Athol Street, for its entire length.
  • The northerly side of the junction with Athol Street, for a distance of 101 metres in a westerly direction.
  • The easterly side of Buckley Road, for its entire length.
  • The easterly side of Rugby Road, from the junction of Halifax Road for a distance of 40 metres in a northerly direction.
  • The northerly side of Red Lane, from the junction with Halifax Road for a distance of 222 metres in a north-easterly direction to the junction with Buckley Lane. There will be temporary multiway lights in operation from Red Lane to the roundabout with Albert Royds Street.

Reason: to repair a leaking water main in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 27 July - 5pm, Friday 31 July 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Dean Court, for its entire length.
Alternative route: there's no alternative route available for vehicles.
Organised by: Rochdale Borough Council.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 27 July - 5pm, Friday 14 August 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Thrum Hall Lane, from its junction with Whitworth Road for a distance of 298 metres in a southerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Whitworth Road, Shawclough Way, Shawclough Road and Paton Street.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to maintain essential gas main works.

Expected start and finish: 7am, Monday 27 July - 6pm, Friday 21 August 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Burton Street, from a point 30 metres south-east of it junction with Factory Street for the remainder of its length in a south-westerly direction, preventing access to the disabled car park.
Alternative route: there is no alternative route for vehicles.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to install a new electricity mains in the footway and carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Saturday 15 August - 5pm Sunday 16 August 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary one-way working of Reservoir Street, from its junction with Albert Royds Street to its junction of Beswick Royds Street for 46 metres. Cars won't be able to travel in a westerly direction along this section.
Alternative route: the alternative route will be Albert Royds Street, Halifax Road, Entwisle Road, Belfield Road and Reservoir Street.

Middleton: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Middleton
Reason: to construct a new way to access the railway station.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Monday 1 June - 6pm, Friday 28 August 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary:

  • Closure of the south pavement on Oldham Road from a point 90 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 80 metres in a westerly direction.
  • No waiting on the north side of Oldham Road from a point 30 metres west of its junction with Mills Hill Road for a distance of 160 metres in a westerly direction.

Alternative route: a pedestrian crossing will be in place so pedestrias can cross onto the north pavement.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to construct a sewer overflow in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 6pm, Monday 15 June - 6pm, Friday 28 August 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Waverley Road, from its junction with Rochdale Road for a distance of 50 metres in a north-westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Rochdale Road and Nowell Road.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to repair a water main in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 9am, Monday 13 July 2020 - 9am, Monday 3 August 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Moss Lane, from its junction with Manchester New Road for a distance of 30 metres in a south-easterly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is signed on site.
Organised by: Rochdale Borough Council.

Area: Middleton
Reason: to construct a manhole onto the sewer in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 7am, Monday 27 July - 6pm, Monday 10 August 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Roundthorn Road, from its junction with Wychwood Close for a distance of 20 metres in a south-westerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles is Roundthorn Road, Naunton Road and Mount Road.

Heywood: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Heywood
Reason: Virgin Media are currently installing new Fibre Broadband in the Heywood area.
Expected start and finish: ongoing
Who to contact: for any issues about this work, please use the following methods to gain the quickest and safest possible resolution:

  • Contractors on site - contact a site supervisor. They are best placed to resolve many issues there and then. In most instances, this will be the quickest and safest way to resolve any issue.
  • Virgin Media Helpdesk - if unresolved, or there are no contractors in the area, or if the site has been left in an unsafe manner and requires urgent attention, please ring the Virgin Media helpdesk on 0333 000 5925. The helpdesk hours are: Monday-Friday 8am-7.30pm & Saturday 8am-12noon. The helpdesk will alert the contractor and Virgin Media's compliance engineers.
  • Alternatively, please email expansionworks@virginmedia.co.uk with details of your address and preferred contact method.
  • Rochdale Borough Council Highways - we need to be aware of issues being raised with Virgin Media. Please email highways@rochdale.gov.uk or phone on 0300 303 8879, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. At all other times, please phone our Contact Centre on 0300 303 8875 for emergency work on the highway.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 7.30am-5.30pm, Monday 10 August - Friday 28 August 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Starkey Street, from its junction with Bamford Road to its junction with Queens Park Road.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Bamford Road, Market Place, York Street and Queens Park Road.

Pennines: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Pennines
Reason: to undertake investigation work for the Flood Risk Management Scheme.

Expected start and finish: 8am-6pm, Saturday 1 August - Sunday 2 August 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of the unnamed access road at Punchbowl Bridge, from a point 40 metres east of its junction with Todmorden Road to its junction with Timbercliffe.
Organised by: Rochdale Borough Council.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to replace a defective waste water frame and cover in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 9.30am-3pm, Monday 10 August 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Smith Hill, from its junction with Dale Street to its junction with Harmony Street.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Dale Street, Chapel Gate, St James Street and Smith Hill.

Area: Pennines
Reason: to repair the carriageway after urgent repairs to a water main.

Expected start and finish: 7am-7pm, Sunday 16 August 2020.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Shore Road, from its junction with Kirkstall Avenue to its junction with Shore Mount.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Kirkstall Avenue, Tintern Avenue, Furness Avenue and Shore Road.
