Book club for those concerned about the environment

Date published: 17 January 2021

A new virtual book club with a focus on environmental issues has been launched.

Extinction Rebellion Rochdale will kick off the new book club – hosted via Zoom – on Wednesday 3 February with ‘Out of the Wreckage’ by George Monbiot.

Monbiot has written a regular column for the Guardian since 1996 after several years with the BBC World Service. He has written a number of books centred around environmental issues, including Feral, a study of rewilding, which helped form the charity Rewilding Britain.

He was also arrested during an Extinction Rebellion protest in autumn 2019.

Revd Mark Coleman, a member of the activist group who himself was also arrested during a protest, said: “It will be a great way to understand more about the situation and work out your response to the situation which we are in with climate change and the ecological emergency. Everybody who comes will be most welcome. This is a group for everybody to share their thoughts and to listen to others.”

In Monbiot’s own words, Out of the Wreckage “sketches a new political story, tailored to the needs of the 21st century, to replace the failed models of the 20th, with which we are currently still stuck.”

Extinction Rebellion is an international movement which wants the world’s governments to declare a 'climate and ecological emergency' and take immediate action to address climate change. Its origins can be traced to a group called Rising Up!, created in 2016 by a small group of activists.
