New book club launched for adults to ‘come together through reading’ and improve mental health

Date published: 21 February 2021

A brand-new online book club for adults has been launched for residents of the borough and beyond to come together through reading – with people throughout Greater Manchester also open to join.

Run by Littleborough couple and Independent Usborne Organisers, Lizzie LeVardi and Niall Grindrod, the book club was officially launched on 1 February and has already been a hit with 29 members signing up.

On the first Monday of each month, a selection of three or four books are put forward to the private group 'Imagination Books - Adult Book Club' where members vote on the book they would like to read, exploring books from a variety of genres and themes to suit all interests.

Lizzie said: “The past year has been very hard on everybody in one way or another, whether that be the passing of loved ones, not being able to see relatives, battling mental health, financial strains or any other way, many people have been affected one way or another!

“The idea behind the club is to allow people to come together virtually, to re-connect again, using our members Facebook group to make new friends with a similar interest or just to offer an escape from reality.

“We have only recently launched, but our members are already creating a real community vibe within their private group - it is lovely to see and be a part of!"

Registration is still currently open for the book club, with the first month priced at £8 and £10 thereafter. This payment covers the cost of a brand-new book, a few goodies, packaging, and postage too if you are outside of the local area.

Aside from the online dedicated group which promotes discussion, socialising and support, each month members will receive a pack containing the following: a new book delivered to your door chosen through a vote by members, a sachet of hot chocolate, mini marshmallows, a chocolate treat, and an extra monthly surprise.

Lizzie continued: “We do not do this for profit, we are doing it to help people connect again and combat loneliness and mental health through a love of books.

“Given the current situation, people are unable to meet, and groups are unable to form. Our adult reading club is online and allows like-minded people to come together virtually and discuss our book of the month.

"Reading is great for mental health and can be a great way to have a break from the crazy, real world we live in currently. Reading is pleasurable, can reduce stress, provide an escape from the 'real world', helps you develop empathy for others, and works your brain and prevents memory loss.”
