Free English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Life in the UK courses at Kashmir Youth Project

Date published: 28 April 2021

KYP - the Kashmir Youth Project - is offering free English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and Life in the UK courses to enable people to acquire new English language skills so they can actively take part in society and achieve their full potential.

The courses are funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration fund (AMIF), which is an EU fund designed to help member states to manage migration.

The courses will help learners to improve their speaking and listening skills, prepare for citizenship and gain a recognised accredited qualification in ESOL (Speaking and Listening).

The courses are designed to:

  • Help learners improve use of English in everyday life
  • Build confidence
  • Improve employability skills
  • Help learners settle into the UK
  • Understand the laws and customs of the UK
  • Prepare learners for the Life in the UK tests

The programme also includes modules promoting and encouraging integration into economic, social, cultural and political spheres of British society.

To be eligible, learners need to hold a third country nationality or refugee status with the right to remain in the UK.

The courses are for eight hours per week for 12 weeks.

A learner who has completed the course said: “I gained so much knowledge on the seven chapters, even though the history chapter was the most difficult part, I managed to understand it with the support of my teacher and peers that used simple and easy to understand terms. Apart from increasing my knowledge about British culture, I also developed my speaking and listening skills as a result of the numerous speaking activities that we did in class”

Another learner said: “At the start, I was very hesitant to speak but now I feel happy talking to people, the integration gave me the opportunity to talk in public and it gave me the confidence to pass my life in the UK and B1 ESOL course.”
