Information on current and forthcoming roadworks planned to take place across the borough.

Rochdale: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to promote social distancing measures due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Expected finish: Sunday 2 January 2022, or until such measures are deemed unnecessary.  
Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure of Packer Street, from its junction with Nelson Street for a distance of 56 metres in a northerly direction.
  • Temporary one-way operation on Nelson Street. Vehicles will not be able to travel in a westerly direction between the junction with Church Lane and the junction with King Street.

No waiting for any vehicle in the following areas:

  • The east side of King Street, from a point 5 metres north of its junction with Nelson Street to a point 39 metres south of its junction with Fleece Street.
  • The west side of King Street, from its junction with Nelson Street for a distance of 5 metres in a northerly direction.
  • The west side of King Street, from its junction with Fleece Street for a distance of 39 metres in a southerly direction.
  • The east side of Packer Street, from its junction with Fleece Street for a distance of 27 metres in a southerly direction, including the new termination point.
  • The south side of Nelson Street, from a point opposite the easterly kerb of King Street to a point 7 metres west of a point opposite the west kerb of Kong Street.
  • The north side of Nelson Street, from its junction with King Street for a distance of 7 metres in a westerly direction.

No waiting for any vehicles except taxis in the following areas and times:

  • No waiting at any time except for taxis in Town Hall Square, the east side within the parking bay, from a point 3 metres south of its junction with the most northerly access road connecting Packer Street to a point 3 metres north of its junction with the most southerly access road connecting Packer Street.
  • No waiting 6pm-10am except for taxis in Fleece Street, the north side from a point 5 metres east of its junction with King Street for a distance of 14 metres in an easterly direction.
  • No waiting 10am-6pm except for vehicles with a valid disabled persons parking badge in Fleece Street, the north side from a point 5 metres east of its junction with King Street for a distance of 14 metres in an easterly direction.
  • No waiting at any time except for goods vehicles loading and unloading in Nelson Street, both sides from a point 7 metres west of its junction with King Street for a distance of 16 metres in a westerly direction.
  • No waiting at any time except for goods vehicles loading and unloading in King Street, the west side from a point 5 metres north of its junction with Nelson Street to a point 39 metres south of its junction with Fleece Street.
  • No waiting 8am-6pm, maximum stay up to 10 hours, for any vehicle not displaying a valid payment ticket in Nelson Street, the south side from a point 9 metres west of its junction with Church Lane to a point opposite the east kerb of King Street.

Alternative route: the alternative route for Packer Street is The Esplanade, Manchester Road, Drake Street, School Lane and Church Lane.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to repair a subsiding carriageway.

Expected start and finish: Tuesday 2 February - Monday 23 August 2021.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Dell Road:

  • From a point 958 metres in a southerly direction from its junction with Market Street for a distance of 100 metres in a southerly direction.
  • From a point 673 metres in a northerly direction from its junction with Shawclough Road for a distance of 75 metres in a northerly direction.

Alternative routes: the alternative route for vehicles will be Market Street, Shawclough Road and Dell Road.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: Monday 19 April - Sunday 16 May 2021.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Regent Street, for its entire length.
Alternative routes: the alternative route for vehicles will be signed on site when the restrictions are in place.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to replace a sewer manhole cover.

Expected start and finish: 9.30am - 3pm, Monday 17 May 2021.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Clay Lane, from a point 5 metres south of its junction with Newhouse Crescent for a distance of 10 metres.
Alternative routes: the alternative route for vehicles will be along Newhouse Crescent.

Area: Rochdale
Expected start and finish: Thursday 29 April - Tuesday 18 May 2021.
Restriction and location: Three way traffic lights on Spotland Road, from Handley Street to Primrose Street.

Area: Rochdale
Reason: to repair a sewer in the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: Friday 30 April - Friday 21 May 2021.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Falkland Avenue, from its junction with Longfield Road for a distance of 30 metres in a westerly direction.
Alternative routes: the alternative route for vehicles will be Longfield Road, Jutland Avenue, Marne Crescent and Sandy Lane.

Middleton: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Middleton
Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am - 6pm , Saturday 15 & Sunday 16 May 2021.
Restriction and location:

  • Temporary closure of Heywood Old Road, from its junction with Whittle Lane to a point 80 metres north of its junction with Langley Lane.
  • Temporary closure of Langley Lane, from its junction with Heywood Old Road for a distance of 80 metres in an easterly direction.

Alternative routes:

  • Hollin Lane, Middleton Road, Coronation Avenue and Manchester Road.
  • Heywood Old Road, Manchester Old Road, Middleton Way, Oldham Road, Assheton Way, Long Street, Rochdale Road and Hollin Lane.

Heywood: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Heywood
Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 8am, Saturday 15 May - 6pm, Monday 17 May 2021.
Restriction and location: temporary closure of Ashworth Road, from its junction with Bury and Rochdale Old Road for a distance of 373 metres in a northerly direction.
Alternative route: the alternative route for vehicles will be Bury and Rochdale Old Road, Norden Road, Bagslate Moor Road, Moorland Avenue, Edenfield Road and Ashworth Road.

Area: Heywood
Reason: Virgin Media are currently installing new Fibre Broadband in the Heywood area.

Expected start and finish: ongoing
Who to contact: for any issues about this work, please use the following methods to gain the quickest and safest possible resolution:

  1. Contractors on site - contact a site supervisor. They are best placed to resolve many issues there and then. In most instances, this will be the quickest and safest way to resolve any issue.
  2. Virgin Media Helpdesk - if unresolved, or there are no contractors in the area, or if the site has been left in an unsafe manner and requires urgent attention, please ring the Virgin Media helpdesk on 0333 000 5925. The helpdesk hours are: Monday–Friday, 8am–7.30pm, Saturday, 8am–12noon. The helpdesk will alert the contractor and Virgin Media's compliance engineers. Alternatively, please email expansionworks@virginmedia.co.uk with details of your address and preferred contact method.
  3. Rochdale Borough Council Highways - we need to be aware of issues being raised with Virgin Media. Please email highways@rochdale.gov.uk or phone on 0300 303 8879, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. At all other times, please phone our Contact Centre on 0300 303 8875 for emergency work on the highway.

Area: Heywood
Reason: to facilitate construction work to widen the road.

Expected start and finish: Until Monday 1 August 2022.
Restriction and location:

  • Prohibit vehicles from proceeding along Hareshill Road, from its junction with Hill Top Road, for a distance of 670 metres in a south easterly direction.
  • Vehicles exceeding 18 tonnes will be able to travel along Hareshill Road for a distance of 1,092 metres in a north-westerly direction.
  • Vehicles wider than 7 feet, 6 inches will be permitted to travel along Hareshill Road from its junction with Manchester Road to a point 60 metres north-west of its junction with Manchester Road. 

Alternative routes:

  • To access Hareshill Road from Manchester Road: Manchester Road, Manchester Street, Church Street, LCpl Stephen Shaw MC Way, Market Place, Market Street, Bridge Street and Pilsworth Road.
  • To access Hareshill Road from Pilsworth Road: Pilsworth Road, Bridge Street, Dawson Street, Bamford Road, Market Place, LCpl Stephen Shaw MC Way, Church Street, Manchester Street and Manchester Road.

Pennines: temporary local road closures and restrictions

Area: Pennines
Reason: to resurface the carriageway.

Expected start and finish: 7.30am - 5.30pm every day from Saturday 15 May - Sunday 30 July 2021.
Restriction and location: Temporary closure of South View Road, for its entire length, and temporary prohibition of waiting at any time on South View Road, for its entire length.
Alternative routes: the alternative routes for vehicles will be signed on street when the closure is in operation.
