Fundraiser for selfless mum's stroke rehab gym

Date published: 24 July 2021

A daughter hopes to raise enough money for a special recovery shed with a gym for her mum after she suffered a stroke on the one-year anniversary of her husband’s funeral.

Lia Jackson is aiming to raise £5,000 for a ‘gym shed’ at the bottom of her mum Jeanna Jackson’s Milnrow garden to aid her in her recovery.

Jeanna, who has worked for the NHS for over 30 years, unfortunately suffered a serious stroke on 15 June, the anniversary of her late husband, Steven’s, funeral.  A stroke is a devastating brain attack, which has a massive and sudden impact affecting people physically and emotionally.

Mum-of-three Jeanna cared and nursed for Steven, 51, until his death from cancer last year.

The stroke, Lia explained, has affected her mum’s entire left side of her body, and slightly affected her face, and she believes a gym will help her mum’s rehabilitation.

She said: “Mum is having physio to get her body back moving but it is a long process. She is due to come home from hospital in the coming weeks and I want to make sure she has tools to help her on her road to recovery.

“My mum is an amazing woman who has dedicated her time to her job and family. If I could provide the shed myself, I would, but I don’t have the finances to do this.

“I’m please asking for people’s kindness to help a woman who has never asked for anything and has looked after everyone else first before herself.”

Around one third of the target has been reached, with Jeanna expected to return home some time in the next month.

The Stroke Association charity estimates that there are 4,600 people living with the effects of stroke in Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton while around 100,00 people have a stroke in the UK every year. There is still a lot that is unknown about the brain or the way it recovers, however it can adapt, and with the right support, stroke survivors can go on to recover even years afterwards.
