Free wellbeing sessions boost for men over 50

Date published: 09 January 2022

Your Home Yoga has been awarded funding to offer free wellbeing sessions to men across Rochdale over the age of 50.

Launched during the pandemic by Louise Corlett and Debbie Cumming, Your Home Yoga has been helping people across the community, with online wellbeing sessions in their own homes, since September 2020.

After noticing that fewer men were taking part, the pair secured some funding from Action Together Rochdale and Action Together Oldham to pilot something specially for men 50+ in both areas. All participants reported feeling better both physically and mentally and detailed a wide range of benefits they had experienced.

As a result, Debbie and Louise have now been awarded further funding to roll out more sessions to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of local men.

Debbie and Louise, who are both qualified and experienced yoga teachers, said: “During the pandemic, we realised fewer men were taking part in our online wellbeing sessions. However, those that were [taking part] told us that they were not only really enjoying the sessions, but were also experiencing great improvement in their wellbeing.

“The feedback we received was hugely encouraging, so much so that we applied for more financial help from Rochdale Action Together who have supported us to roll out these sessions much more widely throughout 2022.”

The weekly 60-minute sessions on Zoom start the week of Monday 28 February, with the option of Monday 5.30pm-6.30pm or Thursday 10am-11am.

The sessions will run for six weeks until Thursday 7 April. There will then be a fortnight break before the next six-week block begins. Your Home Yoga will be running sessions throughout the year, completely free of charge.

The sessions are accessible to all and can be done from a seated position or standing. They will practise techniques designed to increase joint mobility, improve muscle strength, overall balance and co-ordination, breathing, focus, concentration and mood.

In each session you can expect to spend some time finding ways to move each part of the body, comfortably, without pain. You will also be invited to fully relax and spend the last 10 minutes, either seated or lying down, enjoying a guided relaxation.
