Coffee morning raises funds for charity dedicated to ending human trafficking and modern slavery

Date published: 20 May 2022

A coffee morning organised by Rochdale Inner Wheel has raised £250 for a charity dedicated to ending human trafficking and modern slavery.

Dr Anita Sharma, vice president of the Rochdale Inner Wheel women's group and international convenor, who has a special interest in women’s health, organised the coffee morning at Thrum Hall Methodist Church last month.

A total of £250 was raised for Hope for Justice, which aims to end modern slavery by preventing exploitation, rescue victims, restoring lives and reforming society.

The coffee morning was an awareness day to spot the signs of modern slavery and what to do if you think of someone in immediate danger.

Dr Sharma said: “Human trafficking is a type of modern slavery. This crime usually affects women and children from poorer countries. Using psychological manipulations and threats, they keep victims under control.”

Signs of modern slavery include looking injured or malnourished, lack of belongings, avoiding eye contact, avoiding talking to strangers, and dropped off at work at odd times.

Contact Hope for Justice if there is no immediate threat on 0300 008 8000. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, always call 999.
