Two men charged after St Helens police officer injured

Date published: 19 May 2022

Two Rochdale men have been charged after a police officer was injured in an incident in St Helens on Tuesday (17 May).

Umar Anwar, 30, was charged with causing serious injury/GBH by dangerous driving.

Ahmmad Anwar, 26, was charged with possession with intent to supply Class A (cocaine) and Class B (cannabis) drugs.

A backpack suspected to contain cannabis had been reported as being in the road; whilst one constable was retrieving the bag, he approached a white Ford Transit van whose occupants were acting suspiciously nearby.

The van was then driven at the officer, colliding with him, before being driven away from the scene.

A short time later it was reported two men were running from a vehicle into fields and had discarded a bag.

Officers attended, the men were detained and the bag and vehicle were recovered for forensic examination.

Both men were remanded in custody to appear at Liverpool Knowsley Sefton and St Helens adult remand court today, Thursday 19 May.

The injured officer continues to recover in hospital from injuries to his shoulder and wrist.
