Children encouraged to give up fizzy drinks at holiday playscheme

Children taking part in a holiday playscheme at Deeplish Community Centre have been encouraged to give up fizzy drinks for their health and wellbeing.

Deeplish Community Centre welcomed Nigel Goulding RBC Environment Education Officer to their Summer Holiday Activities & Food Programme on Monday 1 August, where children took part in fun and informative activities.

The children learnt about the importance of drinking tap water instead of sugary drinks as part of the Give Up Loving Pop (GULP) campaign. The children got to understand how drinking tap water can benefit both people’s health and the environment, especially with the impact of plastic pollution from single-use plastic bottles.

All the children pledged to help the environment and reduce sugary drinks and were awarded with a GULP bottle with the slogan ‘Reduce, Reuse, Refill, Repeat.’

The children also had the chance to learn how to recycle and help the environment in an action-packed session. They had a visit from the Food Hero recycling wagon and Commander Carrot who explained that all their food and garden waste is collected and becomes compost. The children had a wide range of questions for Andy the driver to answer and were amazed at how big the recycling wagon was.

The children also took up the challenge of a bean bag game where they learnt how to put all the right items in the correct bin in a fun and exciting way as well as dressing up as recycling superheroes.

The younger children were treated to a story of “Somebody Swallowed Stanley” about the importance of not littering and the impact littering has on the oceans which they thoroughly enjoyed.

A playscheme spokesperson said: “We continue to promote health well-being, healthy eating, drinking and active participation in sports, arts and well-being activities through our summer programme.”
