Fundraiser launched for funeral of Stephen 'Moggy' Murray

Date published: 08 August 2022

A community fundraiser has been launched for the funeral of Stephen ‘Moggy’ Murray after his unexpected death earlier this month.

Moggy, 68, was known around Rochdale for his fundraising efforts, including his famous ‘ladder walks’ across the country to support the town's football team, Rochdale Hornets and other good causes.

Most recently, the Dale supporter and former window cleaner undertook a two-week bus tour to raise money for a statue of Rochdale boxing legend, Jock McAvoy.

Moggy’s family have now created a GoFundMe to raise money for his funeral after he died “suddenly and unexpectedly.”

Michelle Butterworth, who is organising the fundraiser, said: “We as Stephen’s family have created this in hopes that we can raise money for Moggy’s funeral.

“Stephen died suddenly and unexpectedly. Family, friends and the Rochdale community are saddened and shocked with the loss of such an amazing man.

“The Mog is a legend, the countless amounts of fundraisers over the years this man has done for a countless amounts of charity events, big or small, just shows what a man the Mog was.

“We ask you all to donate whatever you can, big or small is appreciated. To give Moggy the send-off he deserves.

“He had a massive heart, always thoughtful of others, would do anything for his mates and would do anything to help anyone in need.”

There will be a collection at the turnstiles and in the Dale Bar before Tuesday’s game with Burton Albion to help pay for his funeral costs. Supporters are invited to join a minute’s applause during the 68th minute of Saturday’s game vs Grimsby Town.

Donations can be made via GoFundMe:
