The Oxford Pub
The Oxford pub on Whitworth Road is set to host its inaugural Wine & Cheese Festival on 17 August, marking what is believed to be the first event of its kind in Rochdale.
While beer festivals are a common sight in the area – with The Oxford even sponsoring the one at Rochdale Rugby Club – this new festival aims to offer something different for both men and women to enjoy.
In collaboration with their long-standing wine suppliers, Kwoff of Bury, The Oxford has curated a selection of over 35 wines from around the world. These will be available by the glass or bottle, to be enjoyed on the day or taken home.
The diverse range has been carefully chosen to cater to both novices and seasoned wine enthusiasts, ensuring there is something for everyone, from familiar favourites to more adventurous options.
The festival promises to be a relaxed and enjoyable day, with no formal tastings or rigid schedules.
The pub’s staff will be on hand for those who wish to discuss the finer points of the wines, but the focus will remain firmly on having fun. As the organiser puts it, “If we were any more laid back, we’d fall over.”
The event will be held in the pub's outdoor events space, which benefits from being a sun trap on bright days, yet fully covered in case of less favourable weather.
A dedicated cheese stall, featuring a wide selection from Lancashire and beyond, will also be set up. Ella and Lily, the cheese experts, will be there to help attendees pair their wines with the perfect cheeses, whether it's a bold blue or a creamy smoked brie.
The festival is open to all, with no need for tickets or pre-booking.
The pub will operate as usual, offering an alternative for those who might prefer something other than wine.
Attendees can pay for wine and cheese as they go, with live music providing a backdrop throughout the day. The festivities kick off at midday and will continue until about 7pm.
This is a significant first for The Oxford, and the organisers hope it will be the start of something special in Rochdale. With a full year of events planned for the future, much depends on the success of this debut festival.
