Woman with asbestos-related cancer raising funds for a crucial cause

Date published: 19 August 2024

A Rochdale woman battling a form of asbestos-related cancer is organising a ‘fun day’ to raise funds for Mesothelioma UK.

Michelle Spencer was diagnosed with mesothelioma, which develops in the lining covering some organs, at 60 years old, following asbestos exposure at her first job at Arkwright Mill in Rochdale.

Having worked there as a telephonist and receptionist at the age of 15, the exposure occurred due to blue lagging in the mill’s engine room, which was present for 18 months.

Years later, Michelle says she “doesn’t want sympathy”, but instead wants to raise money for the charity to try and help others with mesothelioma.

Her fun day is set to take place on 31 August from 11am at R-Kix (the former Mecca Bingo Hall) on Smith Street, Rochdale, and will feature a variety of activities and entertainment. Michelle, alongside her friends and family, aims to raise funds for the national charity dedicated to supporting those affected by this asbestos-related cancer.

Included will be various stalls, children's activities, and numerous entertainment options such as a bar, pool tables, darts, and table tennis.

Attendees can enjoy coffee and cake for £5, or a buffet, burger, or hot dogs with chips for the same price. The event will also feature a tombola, face painting, and an auction with a range of exciting prizes.

Michelle said: “There is a tragic coincidence of getting exposed to asbestos in Rochdale, also home to Nellie Kershaw, who was the first published account of the disease now attributed to occupational asbestos exposure.

“After I was diagnosed, I now tell everybody about mesothelioma so that they all know about the dangers. I don’t want sympathy and am now always looking at how I can enjoy and extend my life.

“That’s why I want to help Mesothelioma UK to raise awareness of the disease and why we’re organising a fundraising event. It’s given me a focus.”
