Rochdale landmarks named in ‘ten wonders’ list

Date published: 23 November 2010

Rochdale Town Hall and Cheesden Mill have been crowned two of the ‘Ten Wonders of Greater Manchester’.

Cheesden Mill, submitted by Gerry McLoughlin, to the System One Travelcards campaign to find the ‘Ten Wonders of Greater Manchester’, beat off competition from famous landmarks from across the region, to be recognised one of the best loved locations in Greater Manchester. Rochdale Town Hall was also voted into the top ten.

The top ten are:

  • Whitworth Park
  • Old Trafford
  • Scouthead
  • Urbis
  • Cheesden Mill
  • Messenger of Peace statue, at the Peace Garden
  • Salford Quays Millennium Footbridge
  • MediaCity UK
  • Victoria Baths
  • Rochdale Town Hall

The ‘Ten Wonders of Greater Manchester’ were whittled down from over 100 submissions to the System One Travelcards’ ‘Wonders of Greater Manchester’ Facebook campaign, and decided by a public vote.

The images, which were submitted by both amateur and professional photographers, have been celebrated for their historical, cultural and aesthetic significance to each area, and importance to Greater Manchester as a region.

Gerry McLoughlin, from Summerseat, said: “I am delighted that Cheesden Mill has been included as one of the Wonders of Greater Manchester. The wonderful hill country surrounding Manchester is what makes the city so special for me.

“The mill is part of a long-forgotten weaving village. Its remains, and those of the villages’ houses, roads and walls, are a memorial to a past that made the region great.”

Allie Johns, from System One Travelcards, said: “The search for Greater Manchester’s Ten Wonders has captured people’s imaginations and ignited real pride in their local areas.

“We received hundreds of fantastic suggestions, from right across the region, and as a result have a truly ‘wonder-ful’ top ten. The winners highlight the very best of Greater Manchester, from its natural beauty spots, to its wealth of culture and history.”
