Rugby League: Wath Brow Hornets 18 - 18 Rochdale Mayfield
Date published: 23 May 2017
Mayfield took the long trip to Cumbria to face a Wath Brow team in red-hot form, and despite coming home with a league point - felt they should have had both with solid performance despite a number of notable absencees.
Mayfield were the best team in the first half. Tries from centre/wing partnership Jack Sampson and Lewis Butterworth giving the Rochdale team 10 first half points that could have been more had chances and pressure been capitalised on.
With errors and penalties at a minimum, coach Matt Calland emphasised the need to continue with controlled rugby.
The second half started well for Mayfield as Chris Hough added a penalty and Paul Brearley forced his way over for a try.
At 18-10 Mayfield looked like they would go on the take the points, but Seta Tala over-reacted to a shoulder charge tackle and was dismissed along with a Wath Brow retaliator.
It was 12 aside for the last quarter but Mayfield's composure was tested and the Wath Brow snatched a point at 18 all.
Best for Mayfield was Paul Brearley.
The team take a week off, returning a week on Saturday at home to Pilkingtons.
