Rugby League: Mayfield 28 - 4 Bury

Date published: 31 July 2017

Injuries and suspension in the NCL side meant Mayfield NWML couldn’t go out with their first choice seventeen at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday. It was a credit as to how far the side has come this season as they fielded a quality which still had enough to dispatch a spirited Bury Broncos.

Both gave all in a tough first half hour with some solid rugby league on show for a good crowd.

Mayfield always looked the better side, again credit to their progress.

Mayfield were unlucky not to get on the scoreboard on a couple of occasions with Shaun Hurley and Jack Rush taking the game to Bury and breaking the line with powerful drives.

It took about 35 minutes before the deadlock was broken as James McDade made the most of a half chance to go over in the corner. Marsland converted.

The second half saw both sides again starting strongly Rob Kershaw imposed himself more on the game and a great break from him saw Cameron Connolly keep the momentum going, encouraging his team mates forward and John Foy capitalised on this with a try in the corner.

Mayfield were on a roll now taking control of the game and the introduction of the evergreen 'Stan' Connolly saw them move up a gear as he superbly organised the side.

Within minutes a brilliant short pass from Cam Connolly saw Mcdade crash over for his second. Marsland converted.

Bury refused to give up and managed to grab a score in the corner after a spell of good pressure.

Although unbowed, Bury just couldn’t live with the pace of the Mayfield game.

Mark Biggins scored a typical forwards try proving unstoppable as he tore through the defence to score by the posts. Again converted.

Mcdade completed his hat trick with another converted try and that rounded off the scoring.

It was at times a scrappy performance but overall Mayfield looked competent and registered a good win.

The Benidorm Girls who sponsored the game picked James McDade as man-of-the-match but he was pushed close by Stan Connolly and Cameron Connolly.
