Judo: Dave Hulme wins gold

Date published: 14 August 2017

Dave Hulme, from Rochdale Judo Club, won gold in the under 90 kg category in the East Anglian Open Senior section Saturday (12 August).

Hulme’s first contest was against Josh Illingworth from Kodokwai Judo Club.

He threw Illingworth for ippon with uchi-mata, but this was downgraded to wazari.

Illingworth went on to win the contest.

Hulme won his second contest against Harvey Moore of Boston Judo Club, to progress to the semi-final.

He was to meet Silviu Nastasa of Ealing Judo Club, a very skilful knee-waza technician.

Hulme threw Nastasa with a left handed harai-goshi, which put him in the final against Toby Beamiss of Melbourne.

Hulme won the final with another left handed harai-goshi; this upset Beamiss and he refused to stand on the podium to receive his medal.

Club Chairman Warren Schofield (Seventh Dan) said: "Years of training as a junior and as a senior player at Rochdale Judo Club is making Dave into a true contender/competitor and someone Rochdale Judo Club can be truly proud of.”
