Rugby League: Rochdale Mayfield 28 - 6 West Hull

Date published: 05 October 2017

The heavens opened at the start of this knock-out play-off game at Mayfield Rugby Club but despite the atrocious conditions Mayfield progressed into the next round of the play-offs.

Mayfield carved out the first break as Callum Marriott broke through off a neat behind the ruck play, but his inside pass to Zac Baker was dropped and the chance missed.

Hull were feeling the pressure and conceded a penalty, but Zac Hartley had the ball dislodged when over the line.

Hull looked to get out of danger from the resultant scrum, but Callum Marriott tackled the first runner to and scooped up the loose ball, but the pass to the supporting Paul Brearley was again dropped.

Mayfield rued those missed chance as they conceded a penalty in possession on half way. Full back Jack Sampson could not clean up an in-goal grubber kick and Hull touched down on the right for a converted try.

Hull again exploited Mayfield’s right side defence, but dropped the ball with the clear line beckoning.

Mayfield kicked into gear and forwards Aiden Gleeson, Jack Francis and Luke Fowden charged upfield and forced a Hull knock-on in sight of the try line. From the resultant scrum Paul Brearley scooted over the line for a well worked try.

With half time looming Matty Ashton skipped through the Hull defence and sped to the line for a Zak Hartley converted try.

Mayfield turned the screw straight from the kick-off as Aiden Gleeson chipped over the defence on half way and Callum Marriott brilliantly collected the ball on the run before Luke Fowden passed left to put Wayne English in at the corner. Zac Hartley goaled.

The second half started the same way as Mayfield cut loose. Aiden Gleeson again chipped over and Liam Whalley dribbled the ball to the line to score.

Debutant prop Tom Hall came back on for his second stint of the game and had an immediate effect with two barnstorming runs and tightened up defence in the midfield – where Hull were starting to get some joy.

The next 30 minutes were characterised by some poor discipline in attack and defence by Mayfield, as time and again they were pinned into their own half - only determined scramble defence kept Hull out.

When Mayfield finally got into the opposition half they showed their clinical edge as Liam Whalley grabbed a loose ball and rounded his opposite centre plus the full back to score his second try. Zac Baker goaled.

Mayfield Team: Jack Sampson. Wayne English, Liam Whalley, Sean Watkins, Lewis Butterworth. Zac Baker, Zac Hartley. Aiden Gleeson, Callum Ogden, Tom Hall, Luke Fowden, Callum Marriott, Paul Brearley. Declan Sheridan, Nick Hargreaves, Jack Francis.
