Cricket: Jack Morley earns place at Lancashire Academy

Jack Morley has made a significant breakthrough in his cricketing career by being included in the Lancashire Academy intake for the coming year.

The 16-year-old all-rounder, Heywood’s youngest ever first team debutant at the age of 13, is one of eight players named by Lancashire for winter training and the prospect of playing for the second XI in 2018.

Also called into the squad is Clifton’s Sam Dorsey, whose progress through the junior ranks has mirrored that of Jack.

First team assistant coach Mark Chilton, second team head coach Chris Benbow and performance manager Steve Titchard are part of the Academy support staff.

It is hoped that, in the New Year, former Red Rose all-rounder Tom Smith plus first team squad men Graham Onions – the new signing from Durham – and Steve Croft will assist with coaching sessions.

Academy director Gary Yates said: “With continued development we hope that many of the players will have the opportunity to play for the scond team next season.”

The youngster’s exploits for Heywood, as a left-arm spinner and left-hand bat, have made him one of the most exciting graduates from the club’s youth system.

Jack’s father Rob said: “It is an exciting time for the family and the first step on the Lancashire ladder, but it is ultimately down to Jack to show dedication and the will to develop.”

Jack said: “At club level for Heywood my aim was to compete on all fronts and be the leading bowler at first team level, which I achieved.

“Now I have made it into the Lancashire Cricket Club Academy and this opportunity will help me develop my all-round game, with the possibility of getting the chance to feature in one or two second XI fixtures in 2018.”

Club chairman John Rhodes said: “We at Heywood Cricket Club are all immensely proud of what Jack has achieved, both with us and at higher levels.

“The fact that he has come through our junior system shows that youngsters can use it as a stepping stone to greater things, and we wish Jack all the success in the world.”
