Boxing: Disappointment for Bethany Connellan

Date published: 19 December 2017

Bethany Connellan lost to the four-time National Champion Niamh McGuckin of Berinsfield ABC, Oxford at the Lancastrian Suite in Gateshead in a contest that saw the Hamer boxer constantly take the fight to her opponent but was pipped at the post by Mcguckin's ring experience and heavier punches.

Hamer coach Alan Bacon said: “I feel for Bethany because she has not boxed for well over a year due to injury.

"We matched in the Esker Box-cup, so she could regain the title she won last year but her injury flared up again.

“Then we entered her into the Boys & Girls Clubs Championships and two opponents pulled out on her before she reached the final.

“We were hoping to get more competitive matches for her before she met the champion but sadly it never happened although she had some great sparring sessions in our gym it doesn't match when it comes to competitive bouts. We are very proud of her and know that she will come back stronger from this."

Hamer head coach Steven Connellan said: “Bethany was excellent for a boxer who has been out of the ring for so long.

“We have had a fantastic year for such a small boxing club gaining two National Champions in one year and a National Finalist, along with a National Semi-finalist.

“I cannot thank all of our volunteer coaches enough for all the hard work they put in and we hope to continue with this success."
