Rugby League: Mayfield look to secure Premier Division rugby

Date published: 30 August 2018

Saturday is a big day for the Rochdale Mayfield Club as the NCL side attempts to secure Premier Division rugby for next season and the NWML side looks to win the first division.

A win for the Mayfield NCL side will be enough to make them safe as the two pointswould lift them out of the relegation zone with one game left to play.

If they don’t win all is not lost but it will be down to other results as well as needing to win at home next week against Underbank.

Thier opponents are Normanton, and the Wakefield side have had something of a capitulation of late losing the last five games, after what was a solid first half to the season.

This losing streak has seen them drop below Mayfield level on points but with a much worse difference.

Mayfield look to field a strong side and with some quality players in their midst they will be going into this game with a positive outlook.

With powerful forwards in the side like Aidan Gleeson, Si Moore, Joe Muir and the ever-impressive Callum Marriott all being led around the park by hookers Callum Ogden and Cole Connolly it’s hard to see why Mayfield are in the trouble they are. Add to the mix the Sheridan brothers, Wayne English, Liam Whalley and Paul Brearley and being in relegation trouble is surprising.

If these players hit form they will be coming back over the Pennines safe in the knowledge that they have another season in the top flight of the amateur game.

The Mayfield NWML side makes the trip to Widnes Tigers for a top of the table clash.

With three games left Mayfield need just one win to finish in the top spot. This will see them with a home draw in the play-off games and a great chance to secure promotion to the Premier Division.

Mayfield star performers this season include Zac Hartley, Joe Schofield Corey Newsham, Jack Rush and Jordan Cella. Tom Fitz and Luke Hartley have also impressed.

The lack of regular games over the past few weeks has put a spoke in Mayfield’s wheel but they will be looking to hit form straight away against a very good Tigers outfit.

Both sides are appealing to supporters to make the journey to watch the games knowing that the support they receive has been a massive boost.
