Cricket: Pawson says he will 'take away many good memories'

Danny Pawson is moving on after an 11-season playing association with Heywood Cricket Club.

The now 27-year-old came to Crimble from Milnrow at the age of 17 ahead of the 2008 campaign originally as a wicketkeeper-batsmen, but in recent years has given up the gloves because of knee problems.

The left-hander has turned out to be one of the Heywood’s best recruits, with his undoubted talent and attacking style earning the plaudits of cricket fans throughout the region.

Pawson has also turned his hand to pace bowling in recent seasons, becoming an integral part of the Heywood attack.

His overall aggregate of runs – excluding T20 matches – for Heywood is 7,546 at an average of 34.1, putting him second only behind Bobby Cross in the list of the Club’s all-time record run-scorers.

He took 113 wickets at 23.2 runs each and claimed 230 catches as a wicketkeeper and outfielder.

Now he feels it is time for a fresh start and next season will play for Prestwich in the Greater Manchester Premier League.

He says: “Playing for Heywood has been a privilege. I have had some of the best moments of my career here and owe the club a hell of a lot.

“They helped turn me into the player I have become and nearly fulfilling my dream of becoming a professional cricketer.

“I have made friends both on and off the field that I will never forget and I will always cherish these friendships.

“I would like to thank the club for the opportunities they have provided me with, including being able to captain the first team for three years.

"I will take with me many memories including a Wood Cup win, a League title and two T20 Cup wins.

“Obviously, I cannot mention everyone I have played with but I would especially like to mention three guys who have helped me so much over the years.

“Bobby Cross, Chris Kaye and Travis Townsend have all always been there when I needed them, both on and off the field, and this is something I have very much appreciated – especially in the past 12 months.

“I have decided to leave Heywood as I genuinely feel it is the perfect time for me to take on a new challenge at a new club, and I would like to wish Heywood every success in the future.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the members who have shown great support over the years. I doubt that there is a better supported club in the North West.

“Losing on Saturday at home to Clifton and seeing the side relegated was not how I wanted to go out, but I’m now looking forward to getting started with my new club, Prestwich.”
