Rugby Union: Littleborough Colts 48 - 14 Newcastle Staffs

Date published: 25 September 2018

Littleborough Junior Colts added to thier reputation with another emphatic victory at home to Newcastle Staffs.

Dry and sunny conditions at Rakewood allowed Littleborough to spread the ball wide and on a nice big pitch they capitalised by running in tries down the wing to register the win.

Charlie Sutcliffe opened the scoring with the first of his four tries to settle Littleborough nerves in the first five minutes.

Newcastle responded with a powerplay move that saw some slack tackling from Littleborough.

Deep kicks from Newcastle Staffs were swept up by Sutcliffe who kept the scoreboard ticking over with another couple of tries to add to increasing tally for the season. Bradley Watts added the extra.

The visitors were by no means beaten and began the second half downhill and clawed back a try.

Boro captain Harry Gee led from the front with a strong performance while good cover tackling in the backs, led by Robbie Nolan's textbook technique, settled the nerves again.

A good performance from Charlie Holmes in the middle of the pitch gave Littleborough the edge against a big visiting pack who never gave an inch. Littleborough had the luxury of having substitutes who did not disappoint.

Jacob Harrison latched onto a pass out wide to claim a try and also scored with a tricky penalty later on.

Newcastle heads dropped as the pressure built on them as Ben Stott entered the fray and punished them with some powerful and deceptive running.

Brody Hartley also made a telling contribution from the substitues bench, coming on for a try in the second half.

Charlie Holmes continued to cause more headaches for the away side and his running with the ball and pressure when out of possession earned him a try to close the proceedings.
