Rugby Union: Old Rishworthians U11s 7 – 3 Littleborough U11s

Date published: 05 December 2018

Despite the name, Old Rishworthians played host to some of the youngest in the game as Littleborough descended on Copley Lane.

Boys and girls from both sides of the Pennines aged 7-11 continued their rugby education with an entertaining morning of sport. That was despite conditions that are more conducive to watching from the comfort of a log fire.

Starting our coverage, Littleborough’s Under 11s knew that they would be in for a very tough game away against a drilled side, and it most certainly was that and more.

Going down five nil in the first quarter, many would have expected the visiting heads to drop particularly as it is not something they are used too.

Fortunately, they stayed strong and started to burn on all cylinders, and this is when Old Rishworthians got a taste of what the green army is all about. For the next two quarters the boys and girls in black, green and yellow dominated the game, with a comeback that brought three tries.

The quality of rugby played in such horrendous conditions is huge credit to both teams and bodes well certainly for the future of both clubs.

Even when the visitors lost influential Callum Sharrocks and had to face the rest of the match with a threadbare team on a tiring surface, the young Littleborough under 11s side kept going forward, competed hard at the breakdown area and pushed them back time and time again.

However, eventually through sheer tiredness in the last quarter, two more tries from the home side saw the Halifax based come out on top with a final score of 7-3.

Despite the defeat the young side walked away from a well hard-fought game, with the dignity and respect of everyone who watched them.
