Cricket: New captains at Heywood

Date published: 04 March 2019

Heywood Cricket Club has announced that Sean Burrill will take over as captain of the 1st XI for the coming season. Sean has come through the junior ranks at the club, making his debut in 2013.

Cricket Chairman Roger Smethurst said: “Sean was a unanimous choice to take over as captain, he is a Heywood person through and through and his passion for the club and the development of our junior players, coupled with his energy and enthusiasm will make him a popular choice around the Club. We wish Sean all the best for the coming season.”

Burrill is excited at the opportunity and said: “I am proud to be asked to captain the club I have been at since I was a junior and I am really looking forward to leading the lads this season and hopefully challenging for some trophies and getting back to the Premier division.

“With the loss of some senior players this season gives a lot of younger players the opportunity to step up and show what they are capable of with both bat and ball.

“I would like to thank the club for believing I am suitable for the job and hopefully we can have a good year and contend in all competitions.”

Mikey Grogan, previously captain of the 2nd XI will assist Burrill with the 1st XI and will be replaced in the 2nd XI by Ste Evans who led the side for much of last year when Grogan was selected in the 1st team.

The 3rd XI will continue to be captained by Roger Smethurst.
