Thai boxer Abbie Hughes fought a gruelling five 90-second rounds to win the British Championship belt for under 46k U15.

It was her first success at the British Championships, which were held in Oldham, but she has already proved her prowess having earned five International Champion titles.

The Whitworth Community High School Year 11 student has been attending Valley Thai Boxing Club in Whitworth for the last eight years.

Abbie, 15, said: “Thai boxing is a family thing and my older brother Andy is the trainer and my cousin used to be involved.

“I enjoy everything about it and I enjoy the fighting. At first you are really nervous, but then when the round starts, it just seems really natural.”

After the five rounds were through, the decision went to the judges who unanimously picked Abbie as the winner on points.

She said: “I train four times a week, but on the run up to the British Championships I was training solidly for eight weeks so I was fully prepared. I want to continue with the sport as an adult.

“Next year I will be back at the internationals when I will face fighters from all over the world.”
