Rugby Football League launches #SkillToPlay initiative

Date published: 22 March 2020

Team Rugby League activities are on hold for a while. But some of Rugby League's stars are sharing their skills with the next generation - and keeping everyone active and connected to the sport.

The Rugby Football League has launched #SkillToPlay online resources which showcase some of the game’s finest players and help children and young people to emulate the skills of their heroes.

Freely available via rugby-league.com and Our League, #SkillToPlay inspires children through a range of exciting skills and drills, including how to touchdown.

At the heart of the #SkillToPlay programme are resources to help young players discover the freedom and confidence to try new ideas and express themselves through ‘free play’.

And there are great prizes on offer for the best and funniest videos submitted using the #SkillToPlay hashtag.

RFL Director of Participation and Development, Marc Lovering said: “Right now, physical activity and keeping fit is more important than ever. And for regular young Rugby League players, and those just starting in the sport, it’s an opportunity to develop skills and learn new ones before the action starts up again.

“So, if you're spending more time at home, and if you feel well enough, there's loads of free online Rugby League resources for everyone, and some great prizes to win. You’ll feel better for it, you’ll be a better player for it – and it’s a lot of fun too.

“I’m looking forward to seeing players with ball in hand, taking some ownership of their own development, and becoming free thinking and expressive players for life. Having young people adopt the ‘Move to Play’, ‘Think to Play’ and ‘Live to Play’ mantra will really bring #SkillToPlay to life.

“Some of the game’s best players are getting involved, so come on young players – show Rugby League stars just how good you are!”

Phil Smith, Director of Sport, Sport England, added: “#SkillToPlay is a great way for young Rugby League players to keep active and stay connected to their sport with all the physical and mental health benefits that brings.

“This is a very welcome initiative by the RFL. We want to ensure we face the unprecedented coronavirus crisis together and do everything we can to avoid a negative impact on the nation’s physical activity levels. Keeping active provided you’re well enough is key for all of us.”

With all community game activity suspended including training, the RFL is making more Rugby League learning, development and confidence resources available online to help coaches and clubs, and parents and children, remain engaged with the sport during this difficult time for everyone.

Other content will include an archive of free classic games to watch together, and free mental fitness resources for adults and for children and young people.

#SkillToPlay is available at www.rugby-league.com/skill_to_play and on Our League.
