There was an excellent turnout of sailors keen to enjoy Hollingworth Lake on Sunday 20 December and conclude the racing season.
Racing started with an end of season pursuit race. This suited the young sailors in Toppers. 16 years old Daisy Fisher led the race, followed by Jasper Bramwell. He was nearly caught by Martin Brennan in a Solo, who had mistaken his start time, with Mike Smith, also Solo, following.
The next two handicap races saw a battle between Martin Brennan and Mike Smith until Mike Smith unfortunately capsized. However, it was Daisy Fisher who won the race on handicap in a close result, with Jasper Bramwell coming in third. After Will Smith, in a Laser fourth, there were only a few seconds on finishing time between the next four boats.
For the last race, the cold wind was strong enough to keep everyone going. Martin Brennan kept up the pressure to win and only Jasper Bramwell was close on handicap. Adam Din, in a Laser, was just two seconds ahead of Mike Smith at the finish, with Tom Daniel (Laser) a mere second behind and Hector Droungas (Topper) another second later showing how close it was.
The day also witnessed the launch of the new Topper dinghy, provided by the John Merricks Sailing Trust, for young Alina Zubair to have for the next two years to help her sailing skills, under the RYA OnBoard Scheme.
