“My name is Rabina Asghar and I am your local Liberal Democrat candidate for Spotland and Falinge. It is truly a great pleasure and privilege to represent my local community. The pandemic has changed everything from the way we work and interact, it has brought home the disparities and inequalities which have been neglected for far too long. Not to mention the Labour party, who have neglected this ward of Spotland and Falinge for many years. I want to take this opportunity and pledge to make positive change to our community and help bring an end to the disarray our area has become.”
Rabina is an NHS interpreter currently working in COVID-19 wards across the North Care Alliance hospital's. As a girl she helped out her father Ali Asghar the former Chairman of North West Lib Dems and started campaigning with the party in the 1990s. She attended Oulder Hill school and sixth form before graduating at Manchester Metropolitan University.
"I'm very proud to be from Spotland and Falinge. From urban town centre to rural moorland, it's a unique place with a great mix of people. I want to represent this place and its people. It feels like the right to be standing as we start to recover from the pandemic, our sense community will become more important than ever."
Her three campaign priorities are:
- Improving the local environment and infrastructure – (including the restoration of the cobble setts on Clement Royds Street). The Lib Dems will continue to fight for the reintroduction of free bulky waste collections to help reduce fly tipping.
- Fighting to reduce anti-social behaviour in the ward - Rabina pledges to work closely with GMP and PCSOs in the ward to open up better lines of communication with local communities.
- Campaigning for more youth service provision - young people have been hit hard by the pandemic and Rabina wants to help them get the support that they deserve.
In her spare time Rabina is keen hiker, she loves the countryside and wants to encourage carbon neutral technology for a clean environment.
