On the 2 April, 2008, I will have represented Castleton for 27 years of unbroken service. In that time I have seen regimes come and go, some quite good and others less than adequate. This last 12 months have been the best ever, mainly because it is the first time Liberal Democrats have been given the opportunity to run the Council with sole control. I believe we have done a good job so far and hope to continue in the future. Just allow me to remind you of some of the good things we have achieved for example:

  • We have produced the lowest Council Tax rise for 11 years.
  • The unreasonable charge for collecting unwanted household items has been removed.
  • Liberal Democrats are driving a £250 million investment in our schools including new-builds and refurbishments.
  • New street sweeping machines are being provided for a cleaner environment. Castleton has already benefited by a manual sweeper with brush and pan cleaning the streets.
  • The charge for disabled parking has been scrapped.
  • Every gully will be cleaned within a 12 month period. Drains have been neglected for too long by previous administrations causing a major problems with flooding during heavy rain.
  • The successful alley-gating scheme is to continue. This has already provided security and peace of mind for many residents in Castleton.

We are on course to reach our very important recycling target which also means that money saved on landfill to be spent on local schemes.

The Liberal Democrat council is also providing more police officers to patrol our streets. This was passed as part of the extra spending put forward in our budget.

As the Chairman of the Liberal Democrat Group of Councillors, I am delighted to be part of the success we have brought to the Town and as a life-long Castleton resident it gives me great pleasure to put my name on the Ballot paper once more so that I might continue to work for Castleton and its residents for a further four years.

I'm not over the hill yet!
