Local Election 2008

Mohammed Shafiq

Mohammed Shafiq

Liberal Democrat Party
Bamford Ward

Address
168 Oldham Road
Rochdale
OL11 1AG

As the Lib Dem candidate in Bamford I stand because I believe that together we can change politics in Rochdale – as local residents keep telling me they want less sniping from politicians and a new style of politics. I believe that here in Bamford we have done just that, focusing on the positive work that the Liberal Democrats have achieved here and in the Council.

I’m 29, married with two daughters and born and bred in Rochdale. I bring over ten years experience and success to local community politics, only over the past few weeks we have achieved so much together:

  • Pedestrian crossing at Bamford precinct and traffic calming measures at Norden Road.
  • Launched “Save our Post Offices” campaign to stop the Labour Government from destroying communities.
  • Along with residents in Derrick Walker Court we were able to get the Planning Committee to issue a discontinuation notice on the advert boards that appeared at the Sudden Junction.
  • I have set up a “Friends of Springfield Park” so we can together improve the park and get additional funding, the first meeting will be held shortly.
  • The path at Kemp Avenue that connects to Brimrod School is in disrepair; Along with Councillor William Hobhouse we have allocated money to make the path suitable for local parents, work will start shortly.

One of my key commitments to the residents that I will be out and about more regularly throughout the year not just at election time, I have to confess that I feel best when I’m out in the community with residents and you can be assured that if you give me the honour of being your Councillor that is what I will be doing throughout the year.

I know from the many residents I have met along with Councillor William Hobhouse and Andrew Abbott how impressed you are with our active and energetic campaign.

On 1 May we can make history together here in Bamford, I hope you and your family will join our positive and energetic campaign by giving me the honour of having your vote and representing the best ward in Rochdale.
