Local Election 2011

Maureen Patricia Sullivan

Maureen Patricia Sullivan

Conservative Party
Bamford Ward

Pat Sullivan is standing in Bamford Ward (which also includes Oakenrod, Brimrod, Sudden & Marland) in this year’s May elections.

She is married to Gerry and they have a grown-up son and a married daughter.

Pat’s profession is that of a teacher, teaching English to foreign students at Hopwood Hall College (Rochdale Campus). She is also Curriculum Leader and Teaching and Learning Coach in the ESOL Section (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and an examiner for Cambridge University ESOL Speaking and Listening Examinations. She is also National Chairman of her professional body.

Pat holds both a Degree and a Masters in English as a Second Language.

During the early part of her career she worked for NATO in Paris and Brussels.

She is also very involved with the Birtle Trust which supports Birtle Village in maintaining its character and its existence as a farming community. Pat says: “I am very protective of our Green Belt which we must preserve so that England remains a ‘green and pleasant land’.”

Pat is also Chairman of the newly formed Green Belt Action Group which is campaigning to stop Rochdale Council from siting a cemetery on Green Belt land in Bamford. Pat says: “Bamford Conservatives are supporting the campaign, as one of the policies of the Conservative Party is to preserve and protect the Green Belt. The site is one of outstanding natural beauty that has remained untouched for several hundred years. It is important that we keep our green spaces particularly in urban areas. People who work in an enclosed environment during the week need to be able to get out into the countryside without having to get into their cars.”

Pat says: “If I’m elected. I will work closely with other members of the Conservative Group for the good of the town. I will also work for things which really matter to local people such as repairing potholes, street lighting, a litter–free environment, and ridding our streets of anti-social behaviour.” Ashley Dearnley (Leader of the Council’s Conservative Group) says: “We are very keen for Pat to be elected in Bamford. She has a wealth of experience in working with people and is well informed on national and local issues.”
