I am pleased to have been selected as the Labour candidate for this local election. I believe it is important to have councillors that know their ward and the people in it. I do.

I was born at Birch Hill Hospital, as were my three children, Gemma, Andrew and Kathryn Doodson. I have lived in the Rochdale Borough for the majority of my life and in Littleborough, where I live presently with my husband Ken, since 1980.

My teaching career from 1978 to the present has been in Balderstone, Oulder Hill, Buckley Hall YOI and, for the last 25 years, Wardle Academy (formerly Wardle High School). I was Chairman of Smithy Bridge PTA whilst my children were at the school and I am still actively involved in the community through my roles as Director of Performing Arts, President of the Band Association and Governor at Wardle. As Staff Welfare Officer at Wardle I work on a daily basis to improve people’s life experiences.

There are various issues that I am passionate about:

Young people – they need places to go and things to do. This is the way to get them off the streets and involved in something worthwhile. This can only be achieved through obtaining funding and with ideas from the young people themselves. Let’s give them a voice and a sense of involvement.

Community resources – we are seen as a good place for tourists to our area but leisure facilities and community resources for residents should not be neglected. I will work hard to ensure we get our fair share of funding.

The Environment – talking to people around the ward has shown me that everyday worries are the same as they have been for some time: pot holes, parking, pavements, litter, fly tipping and dog fouling. I will be working hard to get improvements in your everyday lives.

I have already been active in several local issues: securing the future of Littleborough fire station; parking problems; street lighting; repairing potholes; the safety of the Smithy Bridge crossing; facilities at Hollingworth Lake and plans for the Akzo site. I will continue to be active for you.

I ask for your support in this local election.

I will be available for you, I will listen, I will act, I will work hard for you.
